STEMIcathAID is a comprehensive patient recognition and record-keeping system tailored for the management of high-risk STEMI patients. Its design aligns closely with the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline STEMI guidelines, emphasizing the urgency of restoring blood flow to occluded coronary vessels, which is critical in enhancing patient outcomes. The application aims to streamline clinical processes by reducing latency in several key areas, including STEMI recognition, lead acquisition, patient identification, notification of catheterization labs, and the reperfusion process.
The management of STEMI patients involves numerous healthcare personnel and intricate steps. STEMIcathAID employs an algorithmic approach that enhances coordination and communication, essential for swift assessment and safe transfer of patients from external facilities or field settings. Its protocol empowers emergency medical services (EMS) and outside hospital providers to identify patients in cardiogenic shock even prior to their arrival at the catheterization lab. The application features live GPS tracking, providing real-time data on patient transfers alongside critical time stamps to instill a sense of urgency.
The interface incorporates multimedia elements—such as images, videos, and illustrations—divided into three principal sections:
- EKG Upload by outside facility or EMS
- Assessment of Cardiogenic Shock
- STEMI Patient Transfer Pathway
When a clinician suspects a STEMI event, they can promptly upload an EKG by capturing it with a mobile device. Following this upload, a notification is sent to the on-call attending physician at a PCI-capable facility. Should the attending physician verify the suspicion of STEMI, the pathway is activated. This activation alerts approximately 10-12 individuals involved in the patient's care, allowing them to prepare for imminent intervention.
In adherence to HIPAA compliance, all users access the encrypted application to collaboratively review essential patient data, including vital signs, shock details, and real-time locations of emergency vehicles estimated to arrive at the catheterization lab.
This integrated communication framework not only optimizes collaboration among key stakeholders but also ensures that time-sensitive interventions can be initiated without delay for these vulnerable patients.
